What’s Up Awards Show Review - 1/31/2009

2 February 2009 2 Comments

The Wild Buffalo was the place to be on Saturday night - it was the 8th annual What’s Up Magazine Awards Show, featuring Lucky Brown, Sugar Sugar Sugar, Rooftops, Holy Tailfeathers, Candysound and Hot Roddin’ Romeos. The crowd was slow to build at first, but then again, it was only about 9pm when things kicked off. The Hot Roddin’ Romeos played a fired up set of psychobilly tunes, pleasing their friends and fans in front of the stage, and winning some new fans as well. The crowd built in time for the Candysound, a trio of youngsters from Burlington that played cool, energetic pop tunes, ending their set with a Replacements cover that they dedicated to Brent Cole (founder/editor/owner of What’s Up). I skipped out for a bit and missed the Holy Tailfeathers set, but made it back in time for the quirky, angular rock of Rooftops. They had a sound that didn’t exactly appeal to me, but I definitely admire what they were doing - I haven’t seen a trio of guitarists play like that before, creating melodies with single notes instead of lots of chords. There’s nothing original in rock music anymore, so I’m sure someone out there is doing something similar, but they were unique to me. Next up was probably the most popular band of the evening - Sugar Sugar Sugar. The crowd was at capacity, and just a little drunk, so the energy of the band combined with the mood of the crowd created an explosive atmosphere. They managed to sneak in 6 songs into their short 20 minute set, but it was long enough to put a smile on everyone’s faces and even inspire a couple of stage divers, including the MC, Poops. The night ended with the superfly funk and R&B sounds of Lucky Brown, the perfect band to keep the upbeat vibe going, but to also tone down the crowd a bit. You can read all about the award winners in the upcoming issue of What’s Up; below you can see a few photos and a video from Sugar Sugar Sugar.
