luckybrownLucky Brown - Easy Invitation (Westsound Record Co.)

by Boris Budd (What’s Up Magazine - February 2009)

Some people would’ve considered themselves lucky to have heard Lucky Brown’s unmastered version of their upcoming release Easy Invitation. The record is a snappy performance of mostly instrumental funk tunes.

The group is on big time as Joel Ricci and Co. attack the songs with their energetic brand of horn driven tunes. Ricci is stellar on trumpet as usual, but he is not to be outdone by the rest of the band.Drummer Olli Klomp and Tommy D on sax are locked in as well, just to point out some of the many highlights of this upbeat, lighthearted collection.

Technically, the record is very well done. Solid mixes and bone thumping bass lead the charge throughout. The only downside is that I seemed to get lost between individual compositions. It sometimes was, like one big jam session. Luckily for Lucky Brown, the issue is minuscule.

This recording will make you want to go see the group, which is an ever popular activity these days. I usually draw the line pertaining to new funky records, but this one is fun and toe tapping. I think I will keep Lucky Brown’s unmastered record in my archives then sell it on Ebay when they become huge.
